Washington posts lowest jobless rate

The Washington metropolitan area reported the lowest jobless rate in August, 6.0%, among all U.S. metropolitan areas with a population of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Oklahoma City, which ranked as the lowest in July, came in second in August at 6.1%.

Detroit again posted the highest jobless rate among large metropolitan areas at 17.0% in August. It was followed by the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area in Southern California at 14.5% and the Las Vegas area at 13.4%.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, the El Centro CA area registered the highest unemployment rate at 28.7% in August. The Bismarck ND area posted the lowest jobless rate among all areas at 3.3%.
