Washington area posts lowest jobless rate

The Washington DC metropolitan area's jobless rate of 6.2% in October was the lowest among all U.S. metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The Oklahoma City metropolitan and Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News metropolitan area tied for second with rates of 6.5% each.

The Detroit metropolitan area posted the highest jobless rate among large metropolitan areas at 16.7%. The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area in Southern California reported the next-highest at 14.6%.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, Southern California's El Centro metropolitan area registered the highest unemployment rate in October at 30.0%. The Bismarck ND area posted the lowest at 2.8%.
