Volt staffing revenue falls 24%

June 10, 2009

Volt Information Sciences Inc. (NYSE: VOL) reported today that net staffing revenue fell 24.1% year-over-year to $383.9 million in its fiscal second quarter ended May 3. The New York-based firm said the economic slowdown hurt sales as staffing customers cut their use of contingent labor, put on hiring freezes and laid off workers.

The company said its staffing division posted an operating loss of $1.0 million in the quarter compared with operating profit of $6.2 million in the year-ago quarter. Volt also announced it took a $4.3 million restructuring charge in its staffing division during the second quarter as it consolidated offices.

Total second-quarter revenue at the company, which also provides technology, printing and other services, fell 26.1% year-over-year to $447.1 million. Volt recorded a net loss of $8.7 million in the second quarter compared to net income of $3.4 million in the same period a year ago.
