June 13, 2012
The Virginia Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission is calling for the governor of that state to establish a task force on employee misclassification to cut the number of workers being misclassified as independent contractors. It also calls for employers that misclassify to be financially penalized. It also says employers with state contracts who misclassify should be issued a stop work order and possibly disbarred from bidding on future state contracts.
Virginia could have some 214,000 misclassified workers, according to the commission.
