Veteran unemployment rate drops

The unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty in the US Armed Forces at any time since September 2001 fell by 1.8 percentage point year over year to 7.2% in 2014, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The jobless rate for all veterans also fell to 5.3% from 6.6% in 2013.

G.I. Jobs magazine today released its 2015 Top 20 Hot Jobs For Veterans list, which includes jobs for which Fortune 1000 companies most actively recruit post-9/11 military veterans. The jobs range from skilled trade positions in manufacturing and construction to those in operations and logistics, plus cross-industry careers in business administration, sales, human resources, organizational training, customer service and web development.

The top five with average national salary are:

  1. IT specialist: $77.010
  2. Operations manager: $96,430
  3. Engineer: $94,535
  4. Logistician: $73,400
  5. Skilled tradesman: $62,400

The Top 20 Hot Jobs For Veterans list was derived from proprietary data gathered through 2014-2015 Military Friendly Employers survey responses submitted by Fortune 1000 companies. The survey included 189 employers.
