Veteran hiring rises, IT manager/network administrator top job, survey finds

November 11, 2014

Following years of high unemployment, the hiring outlook for recent US veterans may have turned the corner, according to the CareerBuilder Veterans Day Job Forecast.

The survey found 33 percent of employers are actively recruiting veterans over the next year, up from 27 percent in last year’s survey and 20 percent in 2011. Additionally, 31 percent have hired a veteran who returned from duty in the last 12 months, up from 28 percent in 2013.

“Several years ago more US companies started making pledges to recruit and train returning US veterans, and we are beginning to see those efforts pay off,” said Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources at CareerBuilder. “In the past, employers said they sometimes overlooked veterans’ resumes because they weren’t sure how skills learned in the military translate to the civilian world. We’ve learned, though, that when employers make the effort to train and when returning soldiers receive the job search assistance they need, there is almost always a good match.”

Additional survey results include:

  • 23 percent of all currently-employed veterans say they are underemployed or in a low-paying job; while still high, this is down from 32 percent who said the same in 2013.
  • 67 percent of all currently-employed veterans are satisfied with their jobs, up from 59 percent last year.
  • 24 percent all currently-employed veterans plan to change jobs next year, up from 20 percent in 2013.

Veterans are being recruited most commonly for science, technology, engineering and math jobs, according to the forecast. Employers hiring veterans this year listed the following as the top positions:

  1. IT manager/network administrator: 16 percent
  2. Customer service rep: 14 percent
  3. Computer programmer: 14 percent
  4. Engineer: 13 percent
  5. Administrative assistant/secretary: 13 percent
  6. Accountant: 13 percent
  7. Sales rep: 12 percent
  8. Other computer or internet specialty: 11 percent
  9. Mechanic: 10 percent

The survey was conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of CareerBuilder from Aug. 11 to Sept. 5, 2014. It included representative samples of 2,440 hiring and human resources managers and 286 veterans.
