Upwork shuttering Elance platform

July 09, 2015

Upwork will wind down the Elance platform over the next several months, the online staffing provider announced in a blog post.

In early August, new customers will no longer be able to register for Elance and the company in September will begin to limit the ability to post new jobs on Elance. Customers can continue their current projects on Elance through early 2016 and access messages, contacts, and files on Elance through mid-2016.

“I want to personally express that I make this announcement with mixed emotion,” CEO Stephane Kasriel wrote in the blog post. “Like you, many of us have had a long and happy history with Elance. At the same time, I’m excited that our entire team can now focus completely on improving a single online workplace.”

Elance-oDesk in May rebranded as Upwork and launched a new freelance talent platform.

Clarification to original reporting:

Upwork reported that for private talent cloud customers, it will continue to operate Elance through some time next year. It will begin upgrading them to Upwork this summer, with engagement managers working with clients to develop the best individual plan and timing.
