Unemployment claims rise by 16,000

In the week ended Sept. 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 317,000, an increase of 16,000, or 5.3%, from the previous week's revised figure of 301,000. The four-week moving average was 312,750, an increase of 500 from the previous week's revised average of 312,250.

In the week ended Sept. 22, the most recent state numbers, Florida posted the largest increase in initial claims, up 768; followed by Wisconsin, up 582; and Kansas, up 510. The states with the largest decreases included Georgia, down 2,712; South Carolina, down 2,304; and North Carolina, down 1,990. Georgia reported fewer layoffs in the textile and manufacturing industries.
