Unemployment claims rise by 1,000

In the week ended Dec. 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 349,000, an increase of 1,000, or almost 0.3%, from the previous week's revised figure of 348,000. The four-week moving average was 342,500, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 343,500.

In the most recent state numbers, for the week ended Dec. 15, Missouri posted the largest increase in initial unemployment claims, up 3,920. The state cited layoffs in the construction, service, and manufacturing industries. California registered the largest decrease, down 5,354. It reported fewer layoffs in agriculture, forestry, and fishing.
