Unemployment claims jump 20,000

In the week ended Nov. 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 339,000, an increase of 20,000, or 6.3%, from the previous week's revised figure of 319,000. The four-week moving average was 330,000, unchanged from the previous week's revised average of 330,000.

In the most recent state numbers, for the week ended Nov. 3, Michigan experienced the largest increase in initial claims, up 4,599. Kentucky posted the largest decrease, down 1,567. In a tale of opposites, Michigan cited layoffs in the auto industry for its increase while Kentucky reported fewer layoffs in the auto industry as the reason its decrease, according to the Department of Labor.
