Unemployment claims fall by 7,000

In the week ended Dec. 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 333,000, a decrease of 7,000, or 2%, from the previous week's revised figure of 340,000. The four-week moving average was 338,750, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's revised average of 340,750.

In the most recent state numbers, for the week ended Dec. 1, California had the largest increase in initial unemployment claims, up 16,867. The state cited layoffs in the service industry. Wisconsin reported the largest decrease, down 6,390. The state reported fewer layoffs in the construction, service, and manufacturing industries. The report for Dec. 1 shows a turnaround, in the previous week Wisconsin had the largest increase in initial claims and California had the largest decrease.
