Unemployment claims down by 21,000

In the week ended Dec. 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 336,000, a decrease of 21,000, or 5.9%, from the previous week's revised figure of 357,000. The four-week moving average was 343,750, a decrease of 750 from the previous week's revised average of 344,500.

In the most recent state numbers, for the week ended Dec. 22, Michigan posted the largest increase in initial claims, up 12,084. The state cited layoffs in the auto industry. Illinois registered the largest decrease, down 1,819. The state reported fewer layoffs in the construction industry.
