US temp job gains accelerate, penetration rate at high

April 04, 2014

Year-over-year growth in temporary employment services jobs jumped in March. The U.S. added 28,500 temp jobs in March, up 9.6 percent from the same month last year — the biggest year-over-year increase since July 2012, according to seasonally adjusted data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition, the temporary penetration rate — temporary help jobs divided by total nonfarm employment — reached a high of 2.06 percent in March. The penetration rate had reached a high of 2.057 percent in December, but the number was later revised down. BLS jobs data are often revised.

Total nonfarm employment rose by 192,000 jobs in March to a total of approximately 137.9 million. CNNMoney reports that after a winter slowdown, the job market hit a milestone last month as the private sector finally recovered all the jobs lost in the 2008 financial crisis.

The U.S. unemployment rate remained 6.7 percent in March, unchanged from February.

The college-level unemployment rate remained at 3.4 percent in March. College-level unemployment can serve as a proxy for professional employment.
