US non-manufacturing economic index shows acceleration in February

Economic activity in the US non-manufacturing sector expanded at a slightly faster pace in February while employment growth accelerated, according to the Institute for Supply Management’s non-manufacturing index released today.

ISM’s non-manufacturing index edged up in February to a reading of 56.9 from January’s reading of 56.7. Readings above 50 indicate growth.

The median forecast of 78 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a February figure of 56.5.

The employment portion of the index rose to a reading of 56.4 in February from January’s reading of 51.6.
