US jobless claims average rises by 2,000

The U.S. four-week moving average of initial claims for unemployment insurance rose by 2,000 in the week ended June 21 to 314,250 from the previous week’s revised figure of 312,250, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The four-week moving average decreases the volatility of the weekly numbers. Total initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week fell by 2,000 to a total of 312,000 from the previous week’s upwardly revised figure of 314,000.

Pennsylvania reported the largest increase in initial claims for the week ending June 14, adding 7,120. It was followed by California (up 670), Wisconsin (up 542), Delaware (up 438), and South Carolina (up 173). The largest decreases were in Georgia (down 2,245), Missouri (down 2,130), New York (down 2,078), Tennessee (down 1,494), and Puerto Rico (down 1,386).
