The U.S. four-week moving average of initial claims for unemployment insurance last week reached its lowest level since April 15, 2006. However, total claims rose by 23,000 after reaching their lowest level in 14 years, Marketwatch reported.
Last week, the average of initial claims fell by 3,500 to a total of 297,250 from the previous week’s downwardly revised figure of 300,750, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.
The four-week moving average decreases the volatility of the weekly numbers. Total initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ended July 26 rose by 23,000 to a total of 302,000 from the previous week’s downwardly revised figure of 279,000.
