US job openings up

The number of U.S. job openings in April rose 6.9 percent from March to 4.5 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job openings rate — a measure of job openings compared with total employment — rose to 3.1 percent in April from 2.9 percent in the month prior.

The number of hires was flat from March at about 4.7 million, and the number of separations edged up only 0.1 percent to approximately 4.5 million.
