US job openings fall in September but hiring rises

The number of US job openings in September edged down 2.4 percent from August to 4.7 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The level of job openings decreased for arts, entertainment, and recreation. The job openings rate — a measure of job openings compared with total employment — fell to 3.3 percent in September from 3.4 percent in August.

However, the number of hires rose 6.0 percent in August to about 5.0 million. The number of separations rose 5.7 percent to approximately 4.8 million.
