US job openings fall in March but hiring edges up

The number of US job openings in March fell 2.9% from February to almost 5.0 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. February had the highest level of job openings since January 2001.

Job openings decreased in healthcare and social assistance but increased in arts, entertainment and recreation. The number of job openings was little changed in all four regions.

The job openings rate — a measure of job openings compared with total employment — edged down to 3.4% in March from 3.5% in February.

The number of hires rose just 1.1% in March to about 5.1 million. There was little to no change in the number of hires in all industries or regions over the month. The number of separations also rose 4.0% to approximately 5.0 million.
