US – Staffing firm to pay $1.9 million in back wages

May 07, 2013

Employment agency Hutco Inc. agreed to pay $1.9 million in back wages to 2,267 employees assigned to worksites throughout Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division reported.

The Lafayette, La.-based company used improper pay and record-keeping practices that resulted in employees being denied overtime, according to the Department of Labor. Hutco mischaracterized some wages as “per diem” payments and impermissibly excluded these wages when calculating overtime. Violations were found in six branch locations.

The company supplies workers to industries such as vessel construction, oil field fabrication, warehousing and distribution, manufacturing and other industries, according to the Department of Labor. Employees to receive overtime back wages include welders, fitters, tackers, electricians, blasters, painters, forklift operators and warehouse personnel.
