US – Staffing Turbulence in Hurricane’s Wake

November 12, 2012

One staffing firm hiring for Hurricane Sandy clean-up jobs pulled out of Newark, N.J., citing threats to the safety of its clients and staff, according to a report by NJ.com. Separately, a call center in Maine canceled plans to hire 400 temporary workers.

NJ.com reports that Command Center Inc. (OTCBB: CCNI), an Idaho-based employment agency, cancelled Sandy clean-up jobs in Newark in the wake of about 10 threatening incidents. Nearly 1,000 people showed up to apply for 400 part-time positions at the Command Center’s base of operations outside a YMCA, according to the report.

In an unrelated incident in Maine, the Maine Department of Labor on Saturday reported a contract between the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Atlanta-based NexxLinx was canceled. The plan called for NexxLinx to hire 400 temporary call center workers for its facility in Orono, Maine. The workers would have provided assistance to people from nine mid-Atlantic and New England states and Washington, D.C., who were registering for federal disaster assistance or seeking relief program referrals.

FEMA put the contract on hold on the NexxLinx due to a lower than anticipated need for disaster assistance.

Other staffing firms also announced plans to provide services to clean up after the hurricane.

MDT Personnel, a Clearwater, Fla.-based staffing provider, reported on Saturday that it is hiring hundreds of workers to assist with the cleanup efforts after Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey. The firm has three locations in the region accepting applications: East Brunswick, N.J., Perth Amboy, N.J., and Queens, N.Y.
