Six men sentenced to prison in July and ordered to repay $5.0 million for defrauding 42 staffing firms plan to appeal their convictions, according to A Just Cause press release. A Just Cause is a Colorado group that says its aim is to promote competent legal representation for the wrongfully convicted.

The men will allege violations of their constitutional rights to a fair and speedy trial, according to a press release from A Just Cause. They are asking to be released from prison pending their appeal.

“We believe our clients didn’t receive a fair trial,” said Gwendolyn Solomon, one of the attorneys for the men. “We feel strongly that the convictions will either be reversed or our clients will be granted a new trial.”

The six were found guilty in a three-week trial that ended Oct. 20, 2011 where they represented themselves in court, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Five of the men received sentences of more than 10 years while a sixth was sentenced to more than seven years.

The six defendants sentenced include: David Banks, Demetrius Harper, Gary Walker, Clinton Stewart, David Zirpolo and Kendrick Barnes.

The incidents alleged in the case occurred from October 2002 to February 2005, according to the indictment.
