A Missouri man pleaded guilty to defrauding a Chicago-based healthcare staffing firm of more than $400,000 by placing “phantom” employees between 2009 and earlier this year, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri reported.

William Lubker, 51, would tell his employer, Medstaff Locums, that he placed a medical professional when no such worker had been placed, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Lubker would then siphon off money paid to the phantom employees for himself.

Lubker pleaded guilty to one felony count of mail fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Sentencing has been set for Nov. 29.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office reported that Lubker had failed to show up for an earlier hearing but was found and arrested at an extended-stay hotel on Aug. 27.

Lubker agreed to forfeit a number of items purchased with proceeds from the illegal activity as part of his plea, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Those items include jewelry, a Rolex watch, a Breitling watch and three firearms.
