US – Hotel Workers Settle Staffing Firm Suit

December 13, 2012

Indianapolis hotel workers settled a wage-and-hour lawsuit against Hospitality Staffing Solutions, an Atlanta-based staffing firm. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

The 16 plaintiffs alleged that the subcontractor, Hospitality Staffing Solutions, and nine area hotels regularly failed to pay them for all the hours they worked and forced them to work off the clock and without breaks, according to Unite Here, a New York-based union that represents hospitality, food service and gaming workers. Unite Here assisted the workers in the lawsuit. The hotels were later dropped from the case.

“Since the lawsuit has been filed we’ve seen significant changes in the hotel industry in Indianapolis," said Sarah Lyons, an organizer with Unite Here. “HSS is no longer working or functioning in a number of hotels.”

The lawsuit was filed as efforts were also under way to get the city to put in place a rule that would prohibit hotels from striking deals with staffing firms that would prevent the hotels from hiring workers directly. For more on this click here.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reports that the lawsuit came as hotels prepared for an onslaught of Super Bowl visitors. Read the story here.
