UK - Dozens of Filipino nurses to be appointed to ease staff shortages and cut staffing agency costs

30 November 2015

In a bid to cut agency staffing costs, health officials at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust, have appointed dozens of Filipino nurses to work in hospitals.

The NHS Trust, which runs the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, has also recruited nurses from Portugal.

So far, in 2015, the NHS Trust has recruited 61 foreign nurses and regularly promotes recruitment vacancies across the UK.

Use of agency staff cost the trust over £5.2 million last year.

In order to recruit foreign staff, HR and nursing staff interview potential candidates via Skype and then they are hired after passing English language and drug tests.

According to the Royal College of Nursing, a total of 8,183 internationally recruited nurses joined the national medical council to register for work in the UK from 2014-15.
