U.S. mass layoffs drop 23.0% in November

The number of mass layoffs in November fell 23.0% compared with the same month last year on a seasonally adjusted basis, and related jobless claims fell 26.7%, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday.

In November, there were 1,797 mass layoff actions compared with 2,333 in November. There were 165,346 initial claims for unemployment insurance from the mass layoffs in November compared with 225,639 in the same month a year ago.

The industry with the largest number of jobless claims from mass layoffs in November was highway, street and bridge construction with 8,933 claims on a non-seasonally adjusted basis. The industry with the second-largest number of claims was temporary help services with 7,991.

A mass layoff action involves at least 50 workers from a single workplace.
