U.S. manufacturing shows some improvement

June 01, 2009

There were signs of improvement in the U.S. manufacturing sector in May. Although economic activity in the sector continued to decline, it was at a slower pace than in previous months, the Institute for Supply Management reported today. The institute's key purchasing mangers' index for manufacturing posted a reading of 42.8 in May, up from 40.1 in April. However, only readings of more than 50 indicate expansion.

May's reading is the highest since September's reading of 43.4.
