U.S. jobless claims rise by 13,000

U.S. initial claims for unemployment insurance rose by 13,000, or 2.8%, to 472,000 in the week ended June 26 compared with the previous week, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today.

The number of initial claims from the previous week was also revised upward to 459,000 from the first report of 457,000.

MarketWatch reported economists had expected claims to fall to 455,000.

The four-week moving average of claims for the week ended June 26 rose by 3,250, or 0.7%, to 466,500 from the previous week's revised average of 463,250.

Looking back to the week ended July 19, Pennsylvania reported the largest increase in initial jobless claims of 3,460, but the state provided no comment on the reason. Illinois posted the largest drop in initial jobless claims that week, down 3,711, and cited fewer layoffs in the trade and service industries.
