U.S. job openings dip

U.S. job openings fell 36.3% year-over-year in May to almost 2.6 million, and the job openings rate fell to 1.9% in May from 2.8% a year ago, according to numbers released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hires and separations also decreased.

The number of hires fell 15.8% year-over-year to almost 4.0 million in May. The hires rate fell to 3.0% in May from 3.4% in May 2008.

Separations fell 11.6% year-over-year in May to almost 4.4 million. The separations rate fell to 3.3% in May from 3.6% a year ago. Separations include involuntary losses of jobs as well as voluntary departures from jobs such as quits and retirements.
