U.S. Jobless Claims Average Rises

October 18, 2012

The four-week moving average of initial claims for unemployment insurance rose by 750 to a level of 365,500 in the week ended Oct. 13, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The four-week average decreases the volatility of the weekly numbers. Total initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week increased by 46,000 to 388,000. The rise reflects an unwinding of adjustments for seasonal swings at the start of a quarter, according to Bloomberg. The number had fallen by 27,000 in the prior week.
