Total Employment Rises in Canada

Canada added 69,200 jobs in January for total employment of approximately 17.2 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs increased by 31,100, and the number of part-time jobs rose by 38,000.

The Canadian unemployment rate edged up to 7.8 percent in January from 7.6 percent in December.

Ontario added 36,300 jobs in January for total employment of almost 6.7 million; the province gained 20,300 full-time jobs and 16,100 part-time jobs. Ontario's unemployment rate was 8.1 percent in January, unchanged from December.

Manitoba reported the lowest jobless rate among all provinces at 5.0 percent in January.
