The Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas, area ranked as the top job market in terms of the creation rate of new jobs that pay above a living wage, according to research by CareerBuilder and Economic Modeling Specialists. The research found 65.9% of jobs added in Beaumont-Port Arthur area between 2010 and 2014 paid above the area’s living wage of $16.64.
Detroit ranked next with 64.2% of jobs created between 2010 and 2014 paying above the area’s living wage of $17.08.
CareerBuilder and Economic Modeling Specialists International released the rankings as part of their Labor Market 150 Index — a ranking of the labor markets in the 150 largest US metropolitan areas. The quarterly index is comprised of historical and leading indicators that measure the overall dynamism of metropolitan job markets, including job growth above the cost of living.
The top 10 metros creating the most living wage jobs and their percentage of job growth above the cost of living (2010-2014):
- Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas: 65.9%
- Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, Mich.: 64.2%
- Peoria, Ill.: 62.9%
- Reading, Penn.: 61.4%
- Mobile, Ala.: 60.9%
- Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, Wash.: 60.2%
- San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif.: 59.3%
- Rockford, Ill.: 59.2%
- Pittsburgh, Penn.: 57.1%
- Albany-Schenectady-Troy, N.Y.: 55.4%
