Temporary worker cuts

Microsoft Corp., Huntsman Corp. and Sony were among companies recently announcing cuts in numbers of temporary workers they use.

Microsoft Corp. said Thursday it's reducing the number of contingent staff and vendors it's using as part of cuts that also include eliminating up to 5,000 jobs. Bloomberg reported the move would affect 5,000 or more contract workers.

Huntsman Corp., a chemical company based in The Woodlands TX, said it will cut the number of full-time independent contractors it uses by 490 as part of a cost-cutting initiative.

Keihin Indiana Precision Technology, a Greenfield IN-based supplier to Honda Motors, will lay off 100 temporary workers, Indystar.com reported.

In Japan, Sony Corp. will cut 1,000 temporary workers when it closes a television plan, The Associated Press reported.
