Temp staffing revenue growth decelerates in April

June 01, 2015

US temporary staffing revenue rose a median 9% year over year in April among staffing firms taking part in Staffing Industry Analysts’ monthly Pulse Survey. The year-over-year pace is a modest deceleration from the 13% growth rate reported in March, but in line with the 10% pace reported in January and February.

“March’s acceleration in median year-over-year revenue growth for temporary staffing as a whole among survey respondents proved to be short-lived,” said Research Analyst Ziv Tepman. “Still, April’s median growth pace of 9% indicates continued strength. Industrial staffing continued its deceleration trend in terms of year-over-year revenue growth, though the uptick in new order activity in this segment may be a promising sign.”

Healthcare continued to significantly outpace the temporary staffing market as a whole on multiple fronts. According to the report, median year-over-year revenue growth accelerated in travel nursing staffing to 45% in April from 40% in March; in per diem nursing staffing to 29% from 21%; and in allied healthcare staffing to 22% from 14%.

According to the report, median year-over-year revenue growth decelerated in the following staffing segments in April from March:

  • Office/clerical: to 7% from 12%
  • Industrial: to 3% from 8%
  • Engineering/design: to 5% from 10%
  • Finance/accounting: to 10% from 23%
  • Marketing/creative: to 5% from 6%

IT staffing median year-over-year revenue growth remained unchanged at 10%.

Pulse Survey results are based on a monthly survey of US staffing firms. May’s survey included data for April submitted by individuals from 103 staffing companies.

The full Pulse Survey Report is available to firms that take part in the survey. Features include data on bill rate trends, data split by US regions, and tables with a snapshot of year-over-year and month-over-month revenue growth for the most recent month.
