Temp hiring plans edge up in second half, survey says

July 10, 2015

A survey of hiring managers and human resource professionals found 34% plan to hire temporary or contract staff in the second half of 2015, up from the 33% who said the same in a separate survey for the second half of last year, according to CareerBuilder’s new mid-year 2015 US job forecast.

CareerBuilder’s survey for the second half of this year also found 49% of employers plan to add full-time, permanent headcount, up from 47% in last year’s mid-year survey. And 28% plan to add part-time employees, up from 27% in last year’s survey.

“There’s a favorable dynamic happening in the labor market today,” said CareerBuilder CEO Matt Ferguson. “Companies are feeling more financially secure and increasing their headcount. This is creating a more competitive hiring environment, which is having a positive impact on wages and the labor force participation rate. We expect to see continued strength in these trends with nearly half of employers looking to add staff and raise starting salaries in the months ahead.”

The following industries are expected to outperform the national average for permanent hiring in the second half of 2015 with IT, healthcare and hospitality poised to experience the highest year-over-year gains:

  • Information technology: 56%
  • Healthcare: 56%
  • Hospitality: 54%
  • Financial services: 52%
  • Manufacturing: 52%
  • Retail: 50%

The top functional areas where employers plan to add jobs in the second half of 2015 include:

  • Customer service: 31%
  • Sales: 23%
  • Information technology: 22%
  • Production: 18%
  • Accounting/finance: 12%
  • Marketing: 11%
  • Human resources: 9%

The survey was conducted online within the US by Harris Interactive on behalf of CareerBuilder among 2,321 hiring managers and human resource professionals. The survey was conducted between May 14 and June 3, 2015.
