The number of U.S. temporary and contract workers employed per day in the second quarter fell 30.2% compared to the second quarter of 2008, according to the American Staffing Association's quarterly staffing employment survey released today. However, compared with the first quarter, the second quarter was down 3.5%.

"While staffing employment dropped nearly a third from a year ago, U.S. staffing firms are still putting some 2 million people to work every day," said Richard Wahlquist, ASA president and chief executive officer. "We have seen an uptick in staffing employment since early July, and we expect that staffing firms will see increases in demand as the economy recovers."
