Temp cuts, hirings

Among companies recently announcing large cuts in temporary workers were Cummins Inc., Pilgrim's Pride Corp. and Advanced Innovations Central. However, a news report said the Republic Bank & Trust Co. plans to bring in 400 temporary workers.

Cummins, a Columbus IN-based manufacturer of engines, said it will have cut its workforce by 2,500 contingent workers with reductions announced this month and in December.

Pilgrim's Pride, based in Pittsburg TX, will cut 250 temporary workers as part of a workforce reduction at its Nacogdoches TX food processing plant, The (Nacogdoches TX) Daily Sentinel newspaper reported.

Advanced Innovations Central will cut 130 temporary jobs as part of the closing of its Elkhart IN plant that makes mattresses and other products, the South Bend (IN) Tribune newspaper reported.

The Business First newspaper of Louisville KY reported that Republic Bank & Trust Co., based in Louisville, planned to add 400 temporary employees hired through five staffing agencies to help process tax-refund checks.
