Temp Revenue Up 14%; Growth Slows

October 27, 2011

Temporary staffing revenue rose 14 percent in September, showing widespread improvement, but its rate of growth slowed, according to Staffing Industry Analysts’ monthly Pulse Survey released today.

The direct hire and temp-to-hire segments also recorded revenue growth of 29 percent and 23 percent, respectively, in September.

“Growth in temporary staffing has decelerated from early 2011 peak levels, while direct hire and temp-to-hire remain remarkably strong,” said Staffing Industry Analysts’ Research Analyst Dan Begley-Groth. “Within temp staffing, the commercial sector is maintaining 10 percent to 15 percent year-over-year growth while the professional sectors vary greatly by segment. The outlook is brightest within travel nursing, while finance/accounting and legal staffing are rapidly losing steam. The staffing industry is demonstrating more bullishness lately overall.”

Acquisitions continued to tick up in September after decelerating over 2011. Respondents to the Pulse Survey reported 12 acquisitions in the third quarter, up from one in the second quarter and eight in the first quarter.

The Pulse Survey includes responses from 164 staffing firms.
