Temp IT hiring stabilizes, full-time falls short, says TEKsystems survey

July 15, 2014

IT leaders’ temporary and full-time hiring plans have so far fallen short of expectations but temporary hiring has stabilized, according to TEKsystems’ new quarterly IT Reality Check survey comparing current market conditions with the company’s annual IT forecast released in November.

The new survey found 37 percent of IT leaders reported an increase in temporary hiring so far this year. That’s down from expectations reported in the November survey when 46 percent of IT leaders forecast an increase in 2014.

Fifty-four percent of IT leaders said temporary hiring was the same this year as it was last year. That’s up from 43 percent in the November survey.

And fewer IT leaders, 9 percent, reported a decrease in temporary hiring this year — in November, 11 percent expected a decrease.

Switching to full-time hiring, fewer reported increases at midyear than had been forecast in November. The new survey found 31 percent of IT leaders reported increases in full-time hiring, down from the 47 percent forecast in November.

And 56 percent reported full-time hiring was the same as last year, up from 44 percent who said the same in November. However, 13 percent reported full-time hiring was down compared to 9 percent who forecast a decline in November.

The recent survey took place in June and included 240 IT leaders, including CTOs, IT vice presidents, IT directors and IT managers.
