Switzerland – Strong increase in job vacancies in November

27 November 2014

The number of jobs advertised online across Switzerland increased by +10.9% during November 2014, compared with the same month last year, according to the latest Swiss Job Index (SJI) from recruitment firm Michael Page.

Month-on-month, however, the number of online jobs adverts decreased by -1.7%, with companies slowing their recruitment activities.

The SJI is a monthly indicator of the number and types of jobs advertised in Switzerland. The data for the report is collated on the 15th of each month.

Sharp increases were reported in the Insurance sector (+10.2%) and the Marketing & Communications sector (+16.2%) compared with last year. Demand for managers increased by +14.8%, year-on-year, in November, with demand for engineers also up (+7.9%) over the same period.

However, the latest index revealed regional disparities in growth; with online advertising increasing by +1.7% in eastern Switzerland, while western Switzerland reported growth of +0.3%, compared with October 2014.

Charles Franier, Executive Director at Michael Page Switzerland, commented: “The number of job vacancies in the Marketing and Communications sector increased again, by +1.6% in November compared with the previous month, reflecting rising business optimism. Compared with the same period in 2013, there was an increase of +16.2% in vacancies in this sector.”

“By region, growth in the labour markets during November remained uneven. Most likely as a result of the industrial dynamism of eastern Switzerland, the region recorded the strongest month-on-month increase in vacancies with +1.7%. In French-speaking Switzerland growth was more modest with +0.3%, while the vacancy rates decreased slightly in the Zurich region, by -0.2%,” he concluded.
