View All News'Sweeps' find 211 misclassified workers
June 09, 2010
Two "enforcement sweeps" at a New York state construction site found that 12 of 21 contractors had misclassified 211 workers as independent contractors and owe more than $80,000 in unemployment insurance taxes, the New York State Department of Labor reported.
The sweeps took place in January and February at "The Province," a privately owned student housing project being built on land adjacent to the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester NY.
Handling the sweeps was the New York State Joint Enforcement Task Force on Employee Misclassification, a strike force formed in 2007 to combat misclassification.
Other problems, including nonpayment of overtime, were also found, according to the Department of Labor.
