Survey finds most parents want to work

October 15, 2014

Although 89 percent of parents “need” work, almost two out of three of those parents, 64 percent, also “want” to work, according to a survey by FlexJobs, a job search website specializing in telecommuting, freelance, part-time and other flexible work opportunities.

“The next step is for all employers to take a hard look at the data on how work flexibility can affect their company’s bottom line, because the benefits of flexible work options don’t just benefit employees … they also benefit the companies,” said FlexJobs Founder and CEO Sara Sutton Fell.

The survey found 73 percent of those with school-age children at home want job flexibility, and 39 percent of respondents have quit a job or turned down a promotion or a job because of a lack of flexible work options.

The most in-demand type of flexible work arrangement included:

  • 100 percent telecommuting: 79 percent
  • Alternative or flexible schedule: 47 percent
  • Partial telecommuting: 44 percent
  • Part-time: 45 percent
  • Freelance: 39 percent

The survey included 1,500 respondents.
