Survey finds email is best company-wide communication tool, social media least desired

November 16, 2015

Company-wide emails are the go-to communication platform for more than half of small and midsize businesses, according to a survey released by GetApp, a cloud-based business app marketplace. Social media was the least desired method.

These digital channels eclipsed the more tangible, traditional methods, with less than 6% choosing lobby poster boards and hallway banners, and less than 4% choosing mass memos.

Respondents were asked, “What communication tools at your workplace catch your attention most?”

  1. Company-wide emails: 57.85%
  2. Digital display screens: 24.65%
  3. Lobby poster board: 5.96%
  4. Hallway banners: 5.77%
  5. Mass memos: 3.98%
  6. Company-wide tweets: 1.79%

“We knew that digital solutions would be the preferred platforms among employees,” said Christophe Primault, co-founder of GetApp. “But social media, widely seen as the most popular tool for information, was dead last. With millennials already highly active in the workforce GetApp researchers naturally expected this number to be much higher, but the figures highlight the shortcomings of social networks as an effective workplace solution.”

The survey is part of GetApp’s ongoing GetData research program and is based on the responses from more than 500 senior professionals at small and midsize businesses across the US.
