Survey - Boston has longest waits for doctors

May 11, 2009

Boston has the longest wait times for patients scheduling appointments for doctors, according to a survey of 1,162 medical offices by Merritt Hawkins & Associates, a physician search firm and part of AMN Healthcare Services Inc. (NYSE: AHS).

It takes 70 days to see an obstetrician/gynecologist, 63 days to see a family physician and 54 days to see a dermatologist in Boston.

Philadelphia and Los Angeles ranked next after Boston.

Mark Smith, president of Merritt Hawkins, noted that Massachusetts put a healthcare plan in place mandating coverage for all residents and demand for doctors greatly increased. As a result, scheduling appointments has become difficult despite Massachusetts having the most physicians per population among all states.
