Survey - Average IT salary rises amid recession

January 21, 2009

The average salary for information technology workers rose 4.6% over the past year to $78,035 despite the crumbling economy, according to an annual survey released today by Dice Holdings Inc. (NYSE: DHX), operator of the Dice.com job board for IT professionals.

IT workers in Charlotte NC received the largest increase in average pay — up 14.7% year-over-year to $81,426.

Secruity analyst was the job title with the largest year-over-year increase in average wage. Security analysts' average wage rose 8.4% to $86,778.

Female IT professionals earned 12% less on average than males, according to the survey. However, the salary gap disappears when comparing female professionals with their equivalent male counterparts in terms of years of experience, education level and job title.

"That average tech salaries are rising even as the economy falls reveals how much has changed since the dot-com days," said Dice senior VP and Chief Marketing Officer Tom Silver. "Today many technology professionals are seen as core assets where they work. As they enhance their skills, they'll need to align those efforts with the market's shifting demands."

Still, Dice reported a 67% increase in the number of new resumes posted to its site in the fourth quarter, seeming to indicate greater anxiety about the job market.

The survey questioned more than 19,000 technology workers between August and November.
