June 08, 2011

Three percent of U.S. executives plan to add staff in the third quarter, according to the Robert Half Professional Employment Report, released this week.

Seven percent of chief information officers plan to add staff, while 3 percent plan to cut staff, for a net 4 percent of IT executives who anticipate increasing staff levels in the third quarter. That’s down three percentage points from the second-quarter projections. However, 87 percent of CIOs are confident in their companies’ growth prospects in the next three months, a seven-point increase from last quarter.

Forty-eight percent of CIOs said it’s challenging to find skilled professionals today, up five points from the previous quarter. Technical support and networking professionals are in greatest demand right now, according to survey respondents.

Seven percent of chief financial officers plan to add staff in the third quarter, while 6 percent plan to cut staffing levels, for a net 1 percent of CFOs who plan to increase hiring in the third quarter. The index is up one point from the second-quarter forecast. Ninety-percent of the CFOs surveyed are optimistic about their businesses for the coming quarter, up one point from the second-quarter.

A net 19 percent of marketing and creative executives plan to add staff in the third quarter, a 10-point increase from the second-quarter results. Thirty percent of legal executives at law firms plan to add staff.

The report is based on more than 4,000 telephone interviews with U.S. executives to determine their hiring plans and business outlook.
