Survey: 27% of firms to hire temps in Q4

October 07, 2010

Twenty-seven percent of employers plan to hire contract or temporary workers in the fourth quarter, according to a new survey by CareerBuilder and USA Today. That compares with 30% who reported doing so in the third quarter; however, 24% said they are planning to transition some contract or temporary staff into permanent positions in the fourth quarter.

Overall, 21% of employers plan to add full-time staff in the fourth quarter -- the fourth consecutive quarter where at least one in five employers planned to increase headcount.

Ten percent plan to cut staff in the fourth quarter, 65% plan no changes and 4% are undecided.

For the third quarter, 25% of employers said they added full-time, permanent staff, up from 18% who said the same in the third quarter of 2009.

"We have seen positive job creation trends throughout the year, where positions are opening across industries each month," said CareerBuilder CEO Matt Ferguson. "The return to pre-recession employment levels will take some time. Although the recession officially ended a year ago, we still have an economy burdened by debt. Employers are watchful and gradually augmenting their staffs with permanent and temporary hiring."

The survey questioned more than 2,400 hiring managers and human resource professionals
