Survey: 25% of SMBs hiring in 2013

May 29, 2013

Twenty-five percent of U.S. small- and mid-sized businesses have hired or will hire in 2013, according to Sage North America’s SMB Hiring Outlook Survey released today. Forty-seven percent expect their staffing levels to remain the same in 2013 and 7 percent of respondents said they will decrease their staff in 2013.

Of those companies that have hired or plan to hiring this year, 82 percent will staff with full-time employees; 29 percent will hire part-time employees; 10 percent plan to hire contract workers; and 19 percent plan to hire seasonal workers.

“In previous Sage surveys, small and mid-sized businesses have repeatedly reported that taxes and regulations are a roadblock for their business growth,” said Connie Certusi, executive vice president and general manager at Sage Small Business Solutions. “However, what this survey indicates is that while taxes and regulations are factors that influence hiring, the No. 1 driver is a demand for products and services or lack thereof. Uncertainty in Washington, the Affordable Care Act, the minimum wage increase and other issues are secondary.”

Sage North America surveyed 973 businesses in May 2013.
