Summer youth employment relatively flat

August 13, 2014

The number of employed youth, those between 16 and 24 years old, rose by 401,000 to 20.1 million, or 51.9 percent of the overall youth population, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Unemployment among youth rose by 913,000 between April and July, more than last year’s increase of 692,000. The youth unemployment rate was 14.3 percent in July 2014, 2.0 percentage points less than the same month year prior.

The youth labor force — those working or actively seeking work — rose by 3.0 million, or 14.5 percent, to 23.4 million in July. This comprises 60.5 percent of the total youth population, the same as the July value in the prior two summers, but above the July low of 59.5 percent in 2011.
