Summer seasonal hiring to rise this year, survey says

May 21, 2015

This summer, 36% of employers are hiring seasonal workers, up 21% from 2008-2011, according to survey data released by CareerBuilder.

In addition, 53% of employers plan to offer summer jobs that pay $15 or more per hour on average. And 72% of employers will pay their summer hires $10 or more per hour on average.

“The growing number of employers adding seasonal help in good-paying jobs this summer is a strong indicator of labor market momentum,” said Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder and author of The Talent Equation. “Many summer jobs went away completely during the recession as companies eliminated internship programs and as households cut back on vacation and recreation spending. We expect this year’s positive outlook to carry over into full-time hiring across industries and job types.”

CareerBuilder’s data is based on a survey that includes 2,175 full-time US hiring and human resources managers. The survey took place between Feb. 11 and March 6.

Employers hiring seasonal workers include:

  • Leisure & Hospitality: 50%
  • Financial Services: 48%
  • Information Technology: 46%
  • Retail: 42%
  • Manufacturing: 39%
  • Transportation: 37%
  • Healthcare: 26%

The survey also found 77% of employers will consider some summer hires for permanent positions.
